Governor Charles S. Deneen has declared that Wed., Oct. 9, 1912, the forty-first anniversary of the great Chicago Fire is Fire Prevention Day in Illinois. He noted that between 1901 and 1910 the per capita loss through fire in the U.S. was $2.71 compared to the total European per capita loss during the same period of 33 cents. Between 1900 and 1910 the population of the U.S. increased 73% while fire loss increased 134%. Last year Illinois and it's citizens suffered loss of property of approximately $11,000,000. This was a drain on state resources. Also, more than 5,000 lives were lost last year in fires in the U.S. and Canada. The governor wants the people of the state to make a concerted effort to minimize causes of carelessness, ignorance and arson. In conjunction with Fire Prevention Day, propery owners are asked to have their buildings thoroughly inspected for dangerous conditions. Schools will participate in this. Also on that day, schools will begin having fire drills. In conjunction with his speech, the seal of Illinois and the governor's name and the name of the Secretary of State, C. J. Doyle, will be affixed at the capitol in Springfield, Aug. 30, 1912.
