- The elevator and grain storage building of Peabody Coal Company will soon be demolished. The structure was built in the early 1880's. Long-time residents remember when it was constructed because it was the only such building in the North Shore. Peabody Coal is building a concrete grain storage building as a replacement on Church St. When the original building was built, there was a harbor in the city and farmers brought grain and produce to ship to Chicago. When the harbor was closed, farmers no longer brought crops and the elevator was no longer used. The demolition will be completed by winter.
