Latham, Hubbard, Mrs. (née Lucy AnnBarnes) (Died)

The funeral services for Mrs. Hubard Latham were held at the family residence in Wilmette, Saturday afternoon, November 21 [1908]. Mr. and Mrs. Latham were among the oldest residents of this part of the North Shore, having resided in Wilmette since August, 1874.
Mrs. Latham's maiden name was Lucy Ann Barnes, and she was born at Verona, Oneida County, N.Y., on January 11, 1834. She came to Illinois in 1846, and was married at Bristol, Kendall County, November 4, 1852. After her marriage, she resided at Sandwich, Ill., until she removed to Wilmette.
Mrs. Latham had been in feeble health most of the time since her husband's death nearly nine years ago, but she had been able to be around as usual until about two weeks before she died. The end came peacefully and quietly with all of her six children about her bedside.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Herbert G. Leonard of Fargo, North Dakota and Rev. W. C. Cleworth, pastor the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Wilmette. The Lexington Quartette of Chicago furnished the music, and there was a profusion of beautiful flowers.
In his remarks, Mr. Leonard spoke of Mrs. Latham's beautiful home life, of her wisdom and gentleness as a mother, and the love which characterized the homeof which she was the center and inspiration. He dwelt on the many beauriful qualities which endeared her to all with whom she cam in contact. He said she was always interested in, and a friend of, every good cause and was a devoted and loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal church, but over and above all else, she was a home maker. Her chidren and their highest interests were ever in her thoughts.
In conclusion, Mr. Leonard said that Mrs. Latham had lived a long, useful and beautiful Christian life, that her end was peace, and her memory a blessing and a benediction.
The day, the flowers, the music and the remarks were all in keepign with the thought of a Christian triumph. There were no oppressive tokens of sorrow. It was as it should be--a service of thanksgiving to God for the gift of a good and gracious life and the celebration of a real triumph of Christian faith.
The burial was in the family lot in Rosehill Cemetery. Mrs. Latham leaves six children: Mrs. A. L. Negus, Hattie B. Latham, Mrs. Lewis B. Springer and Carl R. Latham of Wilmette, Harry H. Latham of Chicago, and Ellis C. Latham of New York.
