Antoinette Gage is summoned by death

Antoinette Gage, widow of Augustus N. Gage, a resident of Wilmette since 1874, passed away at her home, 1210 Greenwood avenue, Sunday, March 2, after an illness of about five months.

Services were held in Rosehill chapel Tuesday, March 4, Rev. Hubert Carleton of St. Augustine's Episcopal church officiating. Burial was at Rosehill.

Mrs. Gage was counted among the few genuine pioneers of Wilmette and the entire North Shore, having lived in the same home throughout her residence in the village. Wilmette was a huge forest with here and there clearings for homesites connected with what were little more than cowpaths. What is now Twelfth street was a winding lane in those days of the community and travel to and from Chicago was an arduous experience.

From this wilderness and forest Mrs. Gage watched the village develop into one of Chicago's finest suburbs and no small part of the work of beautfication and improvement was accomplished through the influence of the women pioneers. She was particularly interested in the development of the North section of the village, commonly known as the Gage's subdivision.

Mrs. Gage was formerly active in Wilmette women's club circles and a staunch member of Ye Old Towne Folks, an organization of Wilmette pioneers.

Mrs. Gage was born in Washington, D. C., on May 11, 1856, and spent the earlier part of her life in the nation’s capital. The house in which she was born was utilized as a government observation station during the civil war. Most other relatives are residents at Washington and Philadelphia.

She is survive by three sons, Jared P. Gage, Henry N. Gage and Fred L. Gage, all of Wilmette.
