Mrs. M. C. Hecht, 1042 Greenwood avenue, returned to Wilmette early this week from Galena, Ill., where she was summoned by the death of her father, Capt. George A. Schneider, veteran Mississippi river pilot, who passed away Tuesday, May 8, at Lyons, Ia., at the age of 76 years. Services were held Friday, May 11, from the family residence at Galena, and burial was in that city.
Captain Schneider was one of the pioneer steamboat pilots on the Mississippi, and, although well advanced in years, remained at the helm of a stern-wheeler, of the Lyons, Ia., port until the day of his death. In recent years he had been engaged in the sand and gravel trade with his sons, George and Frank.
Captain Schneider survived his wife by the brief span of five months. Mrs. Schneider passed away in Dubuque, Ia., last December.
Surviving Captain Schneider are three sons, Arthur, George and Frank; and three daughters, Mrs. Frank Dunnebeck, Miss Anna Schneider, and Mrs. M. C. Hecht.- Featured Link
