- John A. Dowdle, Sr., 81, a resident of Wilmette, died April 22 at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of the North Shore in Skokie. Mr. Dowdle was born Jan. 9, 1923 in Chicago, one of five children, to Raymond and Elizabeth Carey Dowdle. Survivors include his spouse, Julia (nee McGuire) Dowdle of Wilmette; 11 children, John (Anne) Dowdle of St. Paul, Minn., Julie Rogers of Deerfield, Stephen (Nancy) Dowdle of Northfield, Mary (Harvey) Potts-Levine of Monmouth Junction, N.J., Kathy (John) Mahowald of Seattle, Wash., Carey (Rosemary) Dowdle of Northbrook, Sheila (Peter) Steger of Northfield, Kevin Dowdle of Chicago, Rick (Shannon) Dowdle of Glenview, Denis (Mary) Dowdle of Boston, Mass. and Michael (Chmaine) [sic] Dowdle of Atlanta, Ga.; 33 grandchildren, John, Andrew, Lindsay, Claire, Ryan and Conor Dowdle, Geoff and Spencer Rogers, Brendan, Aidan and Stephanie Dowdle, Katie, Julia, John and Maggie Mahowald, Cara, Brendan, Mark and Erin Dowdle, Peter, Matthew, Shannon, Sarah, Kevin and Madeline Steger, Meaghan, Patrick, Clare, Brigid, Maeve, Thomas John, Margaux and Jacqueline Dowdle; two brothers, J. Jerome (Mary) Dowdle of Boynton Beach, Fla. and James C. (Sally) Dowdle of Wilmette; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Raymond R. (Dee) Dowdle and his sister, Mary (the late Jack) Lucas. A funeral Mass was held Monday, April 26 at Sts. Faith, Hope & Charity Church in Winnetka. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.
