McKenzie School: Shoe drive marks Earth Week

- Claudia Greene and Elizabeth Clemmitt coordinated the shoe drive; Waste-Free Lunch June 6; Winners of drawings for Heavenly Hearth bread are Maureen Smith and Gina Gabrielides; McKenzie's Sandwich Sets still avalable; Members of the Environmental Awareness Committee this year are Pam Brundage, Elizabeth Clemmitt, Jim Drier, Claudia Greene, Beth Miller, Margaret Ng, Karen Novak, Chinyoung Park and Joellen Barga; Wilmette father Norm Ewald organized an exploration of McKenzie School's playground after his sons, Evan and Charles, discovered colorful glass concentrated in one area. After some research it was discovered that the Thompson Glass Works was located on the site. Robert Brady, a Wilmette Fire Department veteran, lived in the area before the school was constructed, and described the changes in the neighborhood. Kathy Hussey, director of the Wilmette Historical Museum, provided reading material on the village history. Neighbor Janice Knobel loaned the school two pieces of original hand-blown glass from the factory; Collection of glass belonging to student Spencer Moy will be on display at the Wilmette Public Library in June
