Richard "Fritz" Kahle had no known history of depression and showed no signs of being a troubled young man with homicidal tendencies.

A law enforcement source, however, said Kahle had a severe drinking problem for which he had not sought help.

For several years, Kahle had lived on Winnetka's Asbury Avenue in a modest ranch-style home with his grandmother Vivienne, and up until last year, his father Richard D. Kahle. One year and one week before last week's shooting, Kahle's father died at age 59, a death that proved emotionally difficult for Kahle, relatives say. His parents divorced in 2000, court records show.

Kahle, recently jobless, had been taking a few classes at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines.

The shooting death of Candice Sepehri has startled the community, but none more than Sepehri's close friends, who knew Kahle as a boyhood friend of Jason Falzer, her 28-year-old boyfriend.

It wasn't until about two years ago that Falzer and Kahle went their separate ways, Falzer's mother Cindy said.

Despite their falling out -- Cindy Falzer would not elaborate on the end of their friendship -- Jason Falzer attended the funeral for Kahle's father.

In 2001, Kahle was charged with misdemeanor battery after he reportedly fought with a security guard at Chicago's House of Blues.

A Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman said Kahle was found guilty but she didn't have any information as to his sentence.

Days after the incident, a bruised Kahle talked of the fight to Cindy Falzer and others at C.J. Arthur's, which is co-owned by Cindy and her husband Art Falzer.

Kahle's funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1747 Lake Ave., Wilmette, where Kahle's mother Marion is a parishioner.
