- The prospective developers of Wilmette's planned five-story downtown tower say they'll go along with the village's request for 15 percent affordable housing per new project if the village will buy them from the developer upfront at 92% of cost. The village would then be required to resell the units to buyers at "affordable" prices.
Wilmette plan commissioners discussed this idea at their May 25 meeting and again last Thursday. They put off a recommendation vote until June 15 at Village Hall. Comments by commissioners Robert Spriggs and Ron Grossman, developer Mitch Miller, residents Angela Trabert and James Higgins and Bruce Huvard, lawyer for the developer. Bob Surman questioned the effect of the balconies on other neighbors. Wilmette planner Kara Breems indicated parking will not be a problem as long as a restaurant isn't in the plan. Chuch Staley, lawyer representing the owner of West End Antiques said parking was a problem on Green Bay Road. - Date of Publication
