- Wilmette Deputy Fire Chief Jim Dominik has asked the Wilmette Village Board to ban the use of torches for paint removal, the cause of a fire June 29 that damaged the home of John Marquardt on the 1300 block of Greenwood Avenue. The paint contractor, Depaepe Painting and Restoration, was fined for not seeking a permit to use a torch for paint removal and for not keeping a fire extinguisher nearby. A ban would be a rarity according to Bernie Arends, immediate past president of the Illinois Fire Inspectors Association.
