Among offices to be filled at the coming election are three seats on the Board of trustees of the Sanitary District. There are, therefore, nine candidates at present before the public, three on each of the main party tickets. Of these nine candidates, George E. Fernald of Wilmette is the only one representing the large territory lying outside the Chicago city limits, in area nearly as large as the city itself. The expense of constructing and maintaining the vast works undertaken by the District, amounting to many millions of dollars is met by taxation of all property within its boundaries. In view of the high property calculation of a large part of this outside territory, and the proposed extension of the Drainage System in that territory, it is only fair that it should have representation on the Board, just as the district outside the city has representation on the Board of County Commissioners. Hence it is to be hoped that Mr. Fernald will receive the united vote of all parties in his territory for an office so far removed from the differences of national issues, but so important to the individual taxpayer. Mr. Fernald was born in Penobscot County, Maine, in 1858; graduated from the University of Maine in 1878 with the Degree of Civil Engineer, and shortly afterward joined the tide of young men going West. He has been a resident of Wilmette for the past twenty years, with business headquarters at 205 W. Monroe St., Chicago. He is not a politician, but with his engineering training and long business experience he is well qualified to give good service in the office for which he is a candidate.
