Loyola’s girls cross country team took sixth place Saturday at the Loyola University Lakeshore Invite at Chicago’s Montrose Harbor.
Ramblers coach ChrisJon Simon was happy with the result, especially considering the Ramblers raced once again without their best seven runners.
Fremd won the team title with 61 points as Loyola totaled 213 in the 32-team field.
Loyola was led by freshman Caroline Zarowski, who finished 13th in 19:51. Fremd’s Kelly Breen won the race in 18:33.
“I was really excited about my finish,” Zarowski said. “I thought I would get top 50 or something. This was surprising.”
Zarowski ran with the other Ramblers for the first mile until she broke away.
“I just had some energy,” she said.
Simon was pleased with Zarowski’s performance.
“This was the first big meet for her,” the coach said. “Her time was a good time, too. This is a confidence-builder for her.”
Madeline Durso was Loyola’s second runner, coming in 29th (20:30). Maddie Fassett followed in 43rd (20:50).
Jackie McDonnell, Loyola’s No. 1, started but didn’t finish Saturday’s race.
