Prof. Oldberg Passes Away in Pasadena

Noted Scientist,for Quarter Century Dean of Northwestern School of Pharmacy, Answers Death's Call WAS AN ABLE AUTHORITYAuthor of Many Pharmaceutucal Subjects, Recognzed throughout United States for His Ability News of the death of Prof. Oscar Oldberg, dean emeritus of the school of pharmacy of the Northwestern university, was received in this city Thursday night by his son, Prof. Arne Oldberg, of the Northwestern School of Music. Throughout the United States Prof. Oscar Oldberg was known as one of the most prominent authorities in pharmacy. For twenty-five years he was dean of the Northwestern school of pharmacy, retiring two years ago. Since that time he has been passing his winters in California, where he died Thursday. The funeral was held there Sunday.Born In SwedenProf. Oscar Oldberg was 67 years old. He was born in Alfta, Sweden, Jan. 22, 1846, and secured his early education in the Swedish public schools. He came to the United States in 1864. On May 19, 1873, the marriage of Prof. Oldberg and Miss Emma Parritt was solemnized in Youngstown, O. He was appointed vice consul of Sweden and Norway in 1872, being stationed at Memphis, Tenn. Later he entered the United States marine hospital service, where he remained for seven years as purveyor, and also at the same time acted as dean of the National College of Pharmacy. Member of Important Commission In 1880 he was named member of the commission engaged in the revision of the Pharmacopoeia of the United States and served as a member of thata body until he retired, two years ago. In 1886 he was chosed dean of the Northwestern school of pharmacy, where he remained until 1911. Prof. Oldberg was noted for his numerous works compiled on pharmacy. He has always been active in promoting the use of pure food and drugs. Besides his widow, Prof. Oldberg leaves three children. They are: Prof. Arne Oldberg, 1024 Maple avenue, Evanston; Virgil Oldberg, Detroit, Mich, and Mrs. Thorton Smallwood of Chicago.
