A United States naval gun will be mounted at the apex of the lawn in front of th Wilmette Village hall in the near future as a memorial to Milton C. Springer, a trustee of the Village for many years and president of the Village board when the site for the Village hall was purchased and the first Village hall erected, in 1890. Mr. Springer was first elected trustee in 1880 and was named Village president in 1890. He died about eight months after taking office, shortly after the completion of the first village hall.
The gun was offered to the Village as a memorial at the regular meeting of the Village board last Tuesday night by Lewis B. Springer, 430 Maple avenue, a son of the former president and himself active in civic affairs. He was recently named to the position of superintendent of forestry in the department of conservation of the State of Illinois. A resoluti0n of acceptance was immediately adopted by the board, provisions also being made for the erection of a tablet bearing a suitable inscription. Trustee Stanton Van Inwagen was appointed to work out details of the location of the gun and plans for dedicatory ceremonies, in conjunction with Mr. Springer. The memorial will probably be dedicated on Memorial Day.
