John Alles' Return to Wilmette After Fourteen years of Absence Convinces Wife He Is Not Dead
The sudden appearance of John Alles of Wilmette after an absence from his family of fourteen years brings to light the fact that Mrs. Alles has been receiving a widow's pension for several years.
Mr. Alles left for his work with the Northwestern Gas Company one summer day in the year 1894. He gave no explanation to his wife that he would be gone longer than usual, but nothing was head from him until Sunday morning, when he appeared at his home in Wilmette and announced that he was ready for diner. He had been in California during his absence working on a fruit farm.
Two years after his disappearance Mrs. Alles, thinking he was dead, obtained from the government a pension of $12 a month for Mr. Alles' services during the civil war.
