T w e n t y - f i v e y e a r s ago t w o schools were in o p e r a t i o n , the C e n t r a l s c h o o l a n d the L o g a n school. T h e C e n t r a l s c h o o l consisted o f t w o b u i l d i n g s , the one f r o n t i n g o n C e n t r a l avenue a n d the " n e w " b u i l d i n g at the c o r n e r of C e n t r a l avenue a n d T e n t h street. T h i s b u i l d i n g h a d been erected in 1906 a n d '07. T h e o l d b u i l d i n g bears the date of e r e c t i o n o f 1893. The L o g a n s c h o o l was erected in the s c h o o l y e a r of 1910-11 Before that a three r o o m frame b u i l d i n g l o cated just n o r t h of the present b u i l d i n g was used for s c h o o l purposes. A f t e r the e r e c t i o n of the n e w b u i l d i n g it was used for m a n u a l t r a i n i n g purposes a n d w as later d e s t r o y e d by fire. r We have grown with Wilmette, from our small beginnings at 1148 Central Avenue in 1920 to our present status as one of the oldest and largest dry goods stores in town. School Census L o o k i n g o v e r the records of those years some i n t e r e s t i n g data comes to light. T h e s c h o o l census s h o w e d a total p o p u l a t i o n in the s c h o o l district of 4,962 persons. T h e r e were between 700 a n d 800 c h i l d r e n e n r o l l e d in the schools. T h e t o t a l cost of the schools was a little o v e r $30,000 T e a c h e r s w e r e p a i d f r o m $55 ta $75 pei m o n t h . M a n u a l t r a i n i n g a n d d.omestir science h a d just been added to the c u r r i c u l u m -- t h e first of the m a n y i n n o v a t i o n s that were to compete w i t h I reading, writing, and arithmetic. | D u r i n g the m o s t of the last 25 years our v i l l a g e has m a i n t a i n e d a r a t h e r steady g r o w t h . T h i s has m e a n t the a d d i t i o n of n e w b u i l d i n g s f r o m time to time t o t a k e care of the c o n stantly increasing school enrollment I n 1914, due to c r o w d e d c o n d i t i o n s a n e w b u i l d i n g was added to the C e n t r a l s c h o o l . T h i s b u i l d i n g c o n t a i n e d an i n n o v a t i o n as far as grade schools of those y e a r s w e r e c o n c e r n e d , n a m e l y , a c o m b i n a t i o n assembly h a l l a n d g y m nasium. F r o m the v e r y first it has been a p o p u l a r place, not o n l y for the school c h i l d r e n , but adults as w e l l have used it for civic meetings a n d r e c r e a t i o n affairs.
