B y Esther Dunshee B o w e r D u r i n g the past 25 years, which have found the w o r k of women greatly augmented along all line? of civic interest, their outstanding characteristics have remained true to the standard set by those women who were our pioneers--substantial character, social grace, educational development and good w o r k s . It is natural that women should have an especial interest in our schools and d u r i n g most of this period there have been one or more women members of the school board. T h e development of the. Parent-Teacher associations has resulted in a closer contact between the home and the school. In each of our schools many mothers are members of these organiaztions. W o m e n were responsible for the formation of an A r t league having as its object the development of art appreciation among school children. T h r o u g h the efforts of members of the W i l m e t t e W o m a n ' s club domestic science was introduced into the schools and fostered until the board of education was in a position to take it over as a part of the regular curriculum. Girls' W o r k A close relationship exists between this w o r k and the development of the Camp F i r e G i r l s and the G i r l Scout organization -- two of t h e p r i n c i p a l character building influences of our teen age girls. A branch of the League of W o m e n Voter* was established, which became actively engaged in campaigns to get out the vote, and generally sought to interest all the women in the village in an active participation in village affairs. D u r i n g these years three women have served a term each as members of the | village hoard of trustees, and the library hoard has called to its service several of our uimien. C i v i c pride has also expressed itself in efforts to lieautify our town, and this has been a field of e n deavor on the part of the W i l m e t t e C a r den club. The W i l m e t t e H e a l t h Center could never have reached its present proportions of usefulness except w i t h the aid of a faithful band of women who appreciated the need for and worthwhileness of this w o r k and spent their time un- i stintingly. T h e Community Chest has been largely sponsored by W o m e n . M u c h of the actual w o r k of collecting | the funds has been done by them, and they have shown an equal interest in the w o r k of our local welfare board. W o m e n In B u s i n e s s It is interesting also to note that during these 25 years there has been a decided increase in the number of women who have gone into business--in some cases entirely independently, in others uniting their interests w i t h men in establishing businesses or seeking employment in commercial institutions which were already going concerns. It is impossible in so small a space to name a l l the organizations and agencies through w h i c h our W i l m e t t e w o m en have exerted their influence--social, civic, philanthropic, economic and in V i l l a g e affairs--but that the life of this village is richer and that W i l m e t t e is a better place in w h i c h to live because of their efforts and influence cannot be denied.
