Concurrent W i l m e t t e L i f e is this week celebrating the 25th a n n i v e r s a r y of its b i r t h . It was established in M a y , 1912, just w h e n W i l m e t t e was e m e r g i n g f r o m the h a m l e t stage of m u n i c i p a l e x i s t e n c e ; w h e n the a u t o m o b i l e was b e g i n n i n g t o relegate o l d D o b i n a n d the f a m i l y s u r r e y to the l i m b o of f o r g o t t e n t h i n g s ; w h e n the r a d i o was a d r e a m of e l e c t r i c a l l y m i n d e d i n v e n t o r s ; w h e n o n l y a f e w homes h a d telephones, a n d w h e n a s m a l l g r o u p of p r o g r e s s i v e c i t i z e n s , w i t h v i s i o n to see i n t o the future, w e r e just r e a l i z i n g that here, r e a d y - m a d e , was the f o u n d a t i o n u p o n w h i c h to b u i l d an ideal home community. A q u a r t e r of a c e n t u r y is not a l o n g p e r i o d , as times goes, but w h a t w o n d e r f u l progress has been made w i t h i n its l i m i t s ! It is a p r o g r e s s f r o m w h i c h no a t t r i b u t e to a desirable c o m m u n i t y life has been e x c l u d e d -- a p r o g r e s s i n w h i c h the schools, the c h u r c h e s , t h e l i b r a r y , t h e c i v i c o r g a n i z a t i o n s , the m u n i c i p a l g o v e r n m e n t , the p a r k s , the c o m m e r c i a l interests a n d this n e w s - m a g a z i n e have m o v e d c o n c u r r e n t l y k e e p i n g an even pace a n d giving, w h e n occasion demanded, a helping hand one to another. W h a t must be the g r a t i f i c a t i o n of those p u b l i c - s p i r i t e d , c i v i c - m i n d e d people w h o , h a v i n g envisioned such progress and h a v i n g c o m plete f a i t h i n the p o s s i b i l i t y of its a c h i e v e m e n t , look about t h e m today a n d note the m a n y fine examples of t h e i r h a n d i w o r k ! T h a t distant day also marked, we firmly believe, the b i r t h of community attributes without w h i c h progress, if possible at a l l , is t r e m e n d o u s l y h i n d e r e d . T h o s e attributes are friendliness, n e i g h borliness, unselfish c o o p e r a t i o n , faith in the v i l lage a n d its i n s t i t u t i o n s , pride of home a n d a g e n u i n e pleasure i n the success a n d happiness of others. W i l m e t t e L i f e has endeavored always, as a f a m i l y n e w s m e d i u m , t o k e e p pace w i t h the p r o g ress of the v i l l a g e . T h a t it has been p e r m i t t e d a share i n that p r o g r e s s o v e r so l o n g a p e r i o d is esteemed a n i n v a l u a b l e p r i v i l e g e . Ex-Service Women T h e A m e r i c a n L e g i o n A u x i l i a r y is p e r f o r m i n g a real p u b l i c service in c o m p i l i n g a r e c o r d of a l l w o m e n w h o p a r t i c i p a t e d i n the W o r l d w a r . N o t o n l y is this r e c o r d i m p o r t a n t f r o m the standpoint of h i s t o r i c a l i n f o r m a t i o n , but it w i l l be of i n e s t i mable value in p r o v i d i n g reliable data and a c c o r d ing due credit i n m a i n i n d i v i d u a l cases. T h e part that w o m e n p l a y e d i n the great c o n flict was on so vast a scale that there is doubt that it c a n ever be a c c u r a t e l y c o m p u t e d . N o r c a n the A u x i l i a r y hope to e m b o d y in a n y r e o r d it p r e pares the i n d i v i d u a l w o m e n w h o r a l l i e d to the support of A m e r i c a n soldiers a n d t h r o u g h R e d C r o s s w o r k , s e w i n g groups, e n t e r t a i n m e n t c o m mittees a n d o t h e r means helped to w i n the w a r . B u t if the records of enlisted w o m e n , w h o a c t u a l l y j o i n e d the A m e r i c a n E x p e d i t i o n a r y F o r c e s a n d served in the r e g i m e n t s as nurses a n d in other capacities, can be c o r r e c t l y g a t h e r e d , it w i l l be an achievement w o r t h y of that group of splendid w o m e n w h o constitute the A u x i l i a r v . The Court "Obstructs" O n c e again the U n i t e d States S u p r e m e c o u r t has d e m o n s t r a t e d that it is the final refuge w h e r e an i n d i v i d u a l m a y seek a n d find "equal justice under the l a w " w h e n a l l o t h e r appeals for relief have failed h i m I r o n i c a l l y e n o u g h , in this instance the i n d i v i d u a l f o u n d j u s t i c e b y t h e a u t h o r i t y of the v e r y t h i n g he w o u l d destroy. A y o u n g N e g r o , a v o w e d l y a C o m m u n i s t , a d i s c i p l e of a p a r t y w h i c h c o n s t a n t l y a t t a c k s the S u p r e m e court, reg a i n e d his l i b e r t y because t h e c o u r t r u l e d t h a t the law- u n d e r w h i c h he h a d been c o n v i c t e d " n e c e s s a r l y v i o l a t e s the g u a r a n t e e s of l i b e r t y e m b o d i e d in the F o u r t e e n t h a m e n d m e n t " In t a k i n g this p o s i t i o n , the c o u r t is t r u e t o the t r a d i t i o n w h i c h m a k e s it the g u a r d i a n of c i v i l r i g h t s b e l o n g i n g even to the h u m b l e s t c i t i z e n . A few m o n t h s ago the c o u r t v o i d e d a p r o v i s i o n of an O r e g o n statute under w h i c h another Comm u n i s t Had been c o n v i c t e d of c r i m i n a l s v n d i c a l i s m B e f o r e this the court o r d e r e d n e w trials for the S c o t t s b o r o N e g r o e s ; set aside the death sentence i n d o r d e r e d n e w t r i a l s for three M i s s i s s i p p i N e groes w h o s e " c o n f e s s i o n s " h a d been o b t a i n e d by t o r t u r e : i n v a l i d a t e d the p u n i t i v e tax w h i c h H u e y L o n g h a d p l a c e d o n o p p o s i t i o n newspapers to stifle p o l i t i c a l c r i t i c i s m T h i s aspect o f the c o u r t ' s w o r k is often o v e r l o o k e d by those to w h o m it s h o u l d m e a n the m o s t -- the r a d i c a l g r o u p s w h i c h d e n o u n c e t h e court as an " o b s t r u c t i o n " to social progress. A s t h e N e w Y o r k T i m e s has r e m a r k e d , the c o u r t " o b s t r u c t s , " to be sure, but w h a t it obstructs is injustice, h y s t e r i a a n d t y r a n n y . * * * T h e D e r b y is over. E n g l a n d ' s k i n g has been crowned. N o w , if Eddie and W a l l i e would hurrv and get m a r r i e d we could go b a c k t o sleep. * * * N o w i f a m a n suspects his w i f e of infidelity and shoots h e r t w i c e , w o u l d y o u c a l l that a t w o time s h o o t i n g ? * * * T'other night we barged right into the midst of a b u n c h of preachers, a n d was c o r d i a l l y greeted. O n e said : " A m a n w h o doesn't g o to c h u r c h a n y oftener t h a n y o u do ought t o get i n t o g o o d c o m p a n y once i n a w h i l e , " a n d the o t h e r s agreed. "At Long Last" T h e S h e r i d a n S h o r e Y a c h t c l u b is to be w a r m l y c o n g r a t u l a t e d u p o n h a v i n g at last b r o k e n g r o u n d for its l o n g - d e s i r e d c l u b h o u s e o n the shore of W i l m e t t e h a r b o r . I t has b e e n a d r e a m o f y a c h t s men from E v a n s t o n to L a k e Forest over a long p e r i o d of y e a r s , the r e a l i z a t i o n of w h i c h w i l l be a source o f pleasure to m a n y thousands w h o never step i n t o a boat a n d k n o w not the difference bet w e e n b o w a n d stern. A s a n i m p r o v e m e n t to W i l m e t t e ' s l a k e front it w i l l be notable, the a r c h i tecture a n d g r o u n d s b e i n g p l a n n e d t o h a r m o n i z e w i t h those of the P a r k b o a r d i n W a s h i n g t o n p a r k It is an a c h i e v e m e n t of w h i c h m e m b e r s of the c l u b m a y w e l l be p r o u d . It has come after years of effort, d i s c o u r a g e m e n t s a n d s e e m i n g defeats --come o n l y because of the d e t e r m i n a t i o n of a s m a l l g r o u p o f earnest m e n t h a t it m u s t come W h e n the club home is finally c o m p l e t e d and opened, those m e n w i l l e x p e r i e n c e the r e w a r d t h a t a l w a y s comes w i t h t h e c o m p l e t i o n o f a g o o d w o r k .
