Society Gets Gifts From An Old Resident

- The Evanston Historical received a generous donation from Mrs. Harriet Ladd. She died in April. She was the mother of Mrs. Henry M. Bannister of Evanston and the widow of Merrill Ladd. The donations include a lithograph of Abraham Lincoln, a woodcut of the Avenue House following the Chicago Fire, when C. R. Hughes was manager, an announcement of the opening of A. Hesler & Sons photographic studio, an announcment of the Evanston Musical Society from 1870; president was Merrill Ladd, vice-president was John H. Keliam,treasurer and secretary was William T. Shepherd, musical director was O. H. Merwin. A circular form the Evanston Social Club dated Sept. 25, 1876; president was David B. Dewey, vice-president were John E. Burke, John G. Ogden and John B. Kirk, treasurer was L. W. Conkey and secretary was M. B. Iott. Ladd also donated old Evanston newspapers. One contained a poem by Frances Willard. Frank Lerch handled subscriptions in the mid-1800's. The donation includes a facsimile of the first issue of the Chicago American. The American terminated its existence when publisher William Stuart was fined by Judge John Pierson for contempt of court because Stuart criticized the court in an editorial about he the John Stone murder trial. The donations also include poetry by Prof. William P. Jones, a former principal of the Northwestern Female College. His daughter, Mrs. Lydia J. Trowbridge will be publishing his poetry. Historical Society President, J. Seymour Currey was please with the donations. The other officers are: vice-president, Frank R. Grover; secretary, William Levere; treasurer, John Hahn; board of directors, Henry Patten, Joseph Ward, Henry Pearsons, Thomas Wallingford, Frank R. Gloer, J. S. Currey and Charles S. Raddin.
