8 WILMETTE LIFE; FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1924 odist General conference. A number are teachers of bible classe$, S unday school superintendents. and five are themse lves ministers of the gospel. These men are: Dr. Temple, of Penn., a Presbyterian; ~fr. McLaughlin, of ~e.braska, a former United Brethren mt~tst.er; Mr. Grant M. Hudson, of M tChlga!', a Bapti st; Mr. ~pshaw of Georg1a, a Bapti st evangeltst; and ~~r .. Kvale of Minnesota a Lutheran mmtster. A rathe~ surprising n~mber are t.he so ns ' of ministers of vanous denommation. h Of the congressmen from the Sout. , most are Methodist, Episco~al, Ba~ttst and Presbyterian. The Eptscopaltans and Congregationalists are strong among the men from the East .. Of the Jews. 5 of. the 9 are from };ew York State whtle of the Roman Catholics. 13 of' the 38 in the House cor:ne from New York State, but the remamdcr of the number are drawn from various sections. . Of those listed as unknown, approximately 95 per cent · are known to be more or less closely affiliated with some Protestant denomin'ation, while of the remaining 5 per cent some at least take a st rong interest in the aff~irs of the Roman Catholic church. There is a notable decrease in the number of Roman Catholics in Congress. due to the great increase in "prejudice" against that church among the people. It is significant, however, that whereas the rise of such a sentiment among the people is quick ly shown in Congress, it has no effect on the executive part of the Government. It is ·practically certain that at least fifty per cent of all persons employed in administrative work for the United States government are Roman Catholic, although t hat ch . :>.:veneludes probab ly not more tPen per cent of the po .. ation. The Roman Cathor""" '-refore have a smaller propo~ J'h in Congress than t heir act ~ percentage of population and .Wery much larger proportion of ~xecutive officers . Ninety .per cent of the me.mbers of the House of Representatives and Senate o.f the United States of the ~th Congress are members of some ;ehgious denominatK>n. Of the remamder, the majority are constituents, although not actual members. The Methodists lead in number of members, having 22 in ~he Hous~ and 23 in the Senate. Many men who are iistcd as non-church members are active constituents of some denomination, their wives being members, or their children in the Sunday school. Frequently these men, who are not are strong themselves members, financial supporters and sometimes are active partici-pants in church li.fe.
