Public Service Company Thanks Telephone Co. for Emergency Aid Cooperation in Recent SubZero Weather Brin1· Acknowled1ement The manne r in which utility corporations cooperate in times of stress or unusua 1 circumstances. and the way in which they acknowledge their obligations to each other, is shown in the appended correspondence between President Britton 1. Budd of the Publie Service company of Northern IlliIllinois Bell Telephone company. . . T he mc1dent referred to was the temporary shut-off of gas in north-~ eastern 11linois cities and towns, January 6, due to an ice gorge at Wilmette which lo" d .:d the water in the canal, thus hamperin~ the operation of the gas plant at Niles. Hence the correspondence : January 16, 1924. Mr. S. J . Larned, General Traffic Supt., Illinois Bell Telephone Co., 212 W . Wa ;· hington St., Chicago. My dear Mr. Larned: Nothing in my experience has im pressed me more than the splendid cooperation given us by your company in the emergency of the 6th instant, when for several hours our gas service was interrupted in a number of towns adjacent to Chicago on the northwest. Officials of public utilities are accustomed to emergencies and to the heroic carrying of the strain and successful grappling with difficulties on the part of their own men; but that occasion, witnessing a similar response on our behalf from the employes of your company , in notify ing all customers in that territory of the cause of the trouble and warning them to shut off all gas, later communicating with them again to inform them of the resumption of the gas service , is to my mind typical of the best public service tradition as it ha s come to be realized in thi s day. That this is generally appreciated is evidenced hy these words in the "Waukegan Sun" of the 7th instant: "It is .the. spirit of cooperation between exist· ing utilities of this sort that shows the public that big corporations arc not entirely without a soul." In expressing to you my deep JZratitude for your assistance and my high appreciation of the splendid spirit displ, ayed by the Illinois Bell Telephone company's personnel, I am keenly desirous that each one oi them may know their conduct and example is regarded throughout the the Public Service company's organization; and [ would request that you please take suitable steps to that end. Your$ very truly, Britton I. Budd. Mr. Britton I. Budd, President, Public Service Company, 72 W. Adams Street, Chicago. My dear Mr. Budd : 1 want to thank you for your cordial letter of January 16th, and am very glad that we were able to give you this help in the s~vice of the public. I am very sure that if the call for help had been from us to you, the response would have hcen just as prompt and wholehearted. The employes who did the work ~iJI be delight~d with your expressiOns of appreciation and I will see that they reach them. I believe it is . t~ue that employes of the great ut1hty companies are ahead of almost all workers in their devotion to the service for which they are responsible and in the pride in a reputation for dependability. Perhaps we can hope for a day when this spirit will begin to appear in such groups as that of the coal miners. At any rate, it is certainly improving the relations between the utilities and their customers. Thanking you again for your kind letter, I remain Yours truly, · (s1gned) S. J. Reinecke, collector. at Chicago. Th e law provides that a married person receiving an income of $2,000 or more is required to file an income tax return even though his personal exemption is $2,500 or over and even though there is no tax to pay. A single person is required to file an income tax ret urn if his income is $1,000 or mor e although his personal exemption relieves him of paying a tax . "It ha s been found in checking over Forms 1099. information reports sent to thi s department by employers showing the amount of money paid employees," says the collector, "that in a great many instances it has been 11 ecessary to call these persons into this offi ce bec a use they had mi sunder stood th'e income tax law and often J.
