WILMETTE .LIFE, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1924 21 .a-- ' · PUBLIC FORUM As an enthusiastic reader of your weekly paper of Wilmette, I take a great interest in br~nging to. your ~tten tion the matter whach I beheve will be of the foremost interest to at least ninety per cent of your. readers, and that is the matter of the hagh cost of gas service and electric light in our village (and I presume in other suburban towns). Nearly everyone who lives in Wilmette, at least many of those I have heard talking about it, all voice the same complaint of the tremendous utility expense. At the country club Saturday two weeks ago, a couple who have been living in Wilmette for two or three years said that they were selling their home simply because of the terrific expense in Wilmette for gas, light and telephone. The telephone cost we understand is excessive to most of us because of the charge of 10 cents per call from Chicago to Wilmette.. The gas and electric light are excessave because of the high cost per cubic foot and Kilowatt hours. Although I have heard the explanation that meters are "fast" and that after all you are charged on an average on the number of lights and the size of your home, this does not seem reasonable and I do not offer it as any part of this argument. The simple and positive way is to determine what is right and that a paper like the WILMETT£ LIFE which is the mouth organ of Wilmette, ought to make a determined effort to back up the rights of the people. Years ago when Wilmette was sparsely populated this extra charge for utility service was perhaps necessary but now with Evanston and Wilmette being thickly populated, shouldn't we have the same advantages that the people living on the other side of Howard street have? Why not open a forum, inviting commcnt from your readers and tlien if it looks as unanimous as I think it is, work out the problem for the best interest or the I ·' n $1 n ... . $1 ... $1 to he th. and ~o contribute to the coming citi- · · zenshap. · McClure Summarizea Our 9. SHEET MUSIC ~ Lloyd Hollister, Inc. Wilmette, Ill. Dear Sir: As Commander .of Hiram J. Slifer Post of the American Legion, I must decline to sign the petition approving the Mellon tax reduction plan and also must refuse to contribute for the expense of sending out these petitions. There is no question in my mind but what this is a move to sidetrack the bill for adjusted compensation or bonus, so-called, for ...the v"·e.tiWS , - -- _ . It would seem only just on the part of your paper, if you would accompany these petitions which you are sending out with a statement that this plan, if carried out, will mean a vote against the bonus but that the bonus bill can be passed, and at the same time a very considerable reduction in taxation can be carried.
