Post-Cold Weather Suggests Needed Inspections Arch B. Van Duesen ~f Motors Service, Inc., Wilmette, is authority for the following hints to motorists. He says "The snow fall of the last montfl or so was very peculiar in that the snow did not pack as it usually does, but seemed to lie in ridges which made the roads very rough. and caused cars which were used during this period to be very badly shaken up. "Local garages see the effects of this every day in the many loose bolts and nuts which are to be found all over the different parts of the cars. It is suggested that . if this is not taken care of, the bolts will continue to work themselves out until there is some damage done by their absence. "The exceptionally rough riding was also especially detrimental to springs, and many were broken. The total breaks were easily located, of course, but in the cases where only a few leaves were broken the breaks were difficult to find unless they were specifically sought. If found and remedied at once the slight breaks are usually of little consequence and money can be saved in the end, as wen as a break of the entire spring. "The cold weather of January also caused im unusual collection of moisture from the atmosphere, and unburnt gasoline from the explosion chambers in the crank cases. The mixture is not a very good one for the crank case, and hard starting will be one of the results. Hence, it is recommended that any car used during the sub-zero weather have the crank case oil changed at once, if that has not already been done. "With Warm weather in the spring it will probably soon be mild enough for a reasonably heavy grade of oil. The light lubricant used in cold weather should now be replaced with one some· what heavier in order that the maximum lubrication may be obtained. "This same matter of a heavier lubricant leads to a consideration of · the grease in the transmission and differentials. In winter we use a grease wh;ch will not get very stiff in cold weather, but this same grease gets very thin in warm weather and will leak out, so that it should now be replaced with heavy grease for summer work. Every day automobiles are being sold. to people, who expect to get real servtce from them. Price cuttmg has been in fashion for some time past and there has been developed what i~ known as the "one year car" as a re~ ult. 'rhis <lefeats the expectations of people who expect to get the utmost from their cars when they once buy them. While some improvements have been made in the motor plants of some cars, the painting and trimming have suffered as the result of lover prices. Body Metal Inferior The metal used in the construction of bodies is of such inferior grade that it is extremely susceptible to the action of rust, and as soon as the paint cracks ·and peels off in spots the rust which is in the form of fire soo~ works havoc with the metal. ' E,.ren the higher priced cars are not puttingl on anything like a real paint ·ob. and anyone who buys a new car at~d runs it for six or eight month s. wtll soon see the need of having something done about paint, if they want to preserve their car. An automobile, properly painted, should have a good lust re, without checks, or cracks, at least two years 'lfter it comes from the factory. There is no place where the use of cheap, inferior or untried materials is as poor economy as in the painting and varnishing of automobiles. No varnished article is subjected to greater abuse or required to render service under such severe conditions. The painting of an automobile is a very difficult proposition , and the skill and time required to make a perfect and lasting job entitles it to the very >f'st care the owner can give it. estabhshed as W11ls Sainte Claire dealers with display rooms and first class service station at 1015-17 David strekt, Evanston. This water and mud gets on the brake riggings under the car and causes the p.~rts to rust. This will seriously impair the efficiency of the brakes, therefore special care must be taken to keep at! the movable parts of the rigging well oiled." Mr-..4 Van Duesen concludes his sea· sonal hints with a warning that all cars with new finishes should be immediately cleansed of mud and water since if this is not done after the mud is thrown on the car, spots will be left on the body when it is finally cleaned.
