To those brav_e souls who made the supreme s.acnfice we arc everlastingly obligated. Thousands of them left children, innocent victims of the war who must. be cared for and educated.' The pubhc debt to these homeless youngsters can never be paid in full. The legion maintains its own orphans' home. Not one where these youn&'ste~s are herdt:d together in dormtmt1es. but where they live in ~ottages. Where the woman in charge IS not known to them as matron but as mother. These children can"t be farmed out, but must finish a high school education. Important Relief Work The program of the state service and relief department for this year is HO~PITILIZATION for every exservtce man when he needs it. Do you know that under the present system---of "red tape" that a tooth fo be filled by a government dentist will be decayed beyond repair long before the "red tape" is ground out? Any government dentist will verify this statement. Daily the need of immediate medical attention presents itself. The scars while seemingly heated ~re not cured and the yearly average mcrease of mental cases traceable direct.ly to the ravishes of war are appallmg. To carry on this all important work funds are essential. The legion stands· in the breach wi'th the n.ecessary relief for the needy and the SICk. At this writing there is in the legislative mill a bill to create a hospital for the treatttent' <H mental ~ases at Great LalCes, Ill. We are gomg to be called upon to do rnuch work at this point. A tract of ,land has been purchased by the state department of the legion on which to take Qare of the men· "who are not sick neither are they well." They just .n~ed sorne treatment to enable them to regain their mental balance so that they can take up the responsibilities of, life and make living for them'selves as it should be. Poat Haa Bi1 Job Locally, Wilmette post is called upon in the course of the year to do much service and relief work. In the past year we have assisted men and their families in finding employment and helping them over the rough spots in a financial way. Baskets have been filled and distributed at the holiday season. Clothing has been gathered and distributed to individuals and at the hospitals. You will recall the fire which devasted a considerable portion of the business block on East Railroad avenue. From the legion's stor.e of c~st-off clothing gathered dunng a penod, garments were furnished to the homeless. Instance after instance could be cited, but we trust that the good folks of the community ~ealize and know what we are doing bn this regard. Not one request has een turned away. f These poppies have been purchased ro~ the state department of the ~egJon. The funds realized are used In the state-wide ser¥ice and relief work. The money received in the sale to the individual in the community is equally divided between the legion P<>st and the Ladies' auxiliary for local service and relief work. SECURE THREE BANDS Olildren and Scout Groups To March The most impressive Memorial Day program in the history of Wilmette has been arranged for next Friday by the Wilmette Post, No. 46, the American Legion, with the assistance of the Woman's auxiliary of the post, the Pete-r J. Huerter Post in the west section of the village and various Wilmette civic organizations. Memorial Day activities will begin early in the morning for the legionnaires with the program calling for visits to nearby cemeteries and a memorial service in conjunction with the Peter ]. Huerter Post at St. Joseph's before undertaking the great street procession and Lake Front park services.
