. ITHE PUBUC FORUM I 8 CLOSE ltTH ST.? NEVER! Editor W11,11~ Lrn: Information has just reached me that the village trustees are considering a petition to have the n~rtherlr end of Tenth street closed. .I~ ts clatmed, so I am told, that the v1s1ts to. that area of n_octurnal spooning parttes are off~s1ye, therefore the str~et should be ehnuneted . Was llf!ythmg .more absurd ever conce1ved outstde an msane asylum? If Tenth street were closed and t~e spooners flocked to. another place, say somewhere on Wtlmette .avenue, would the ,Srustm sugg4;St ~IQl'Uii that thorough£are too? What nonsense I u' any alle.ged invaders of Tenth street are objectionable, a nuisanet, ·what's our police department for? Why not send an officer up there to make a few arrests? A few terms in the workhouse would put North Tenth street on the moral map, believe me. I can hardly conceive that a body of men as intelligent as our village trustees are supposed to be, would give a moment's thought to such a proposition. The trustee who would vote to close Tenth street for the reason advanced would leave himself open to suspicion. Either his sanity or his fitness to hold public office would be in doubt. Let us hope that "R. H. L." of the Tribune or the wags on the other ·Chicago newspapers do not learn of this proceeding, else they might make Wjlmette the laughing stock not alone of the north shore villages, but of the nation. If I could make myself believe the members of the board of trustees seriously contemplated such action, I would willingly join in a parade of Wilmette taxpayers to march to the town hall as a protest to the silly scheme.
