Dorothy B~ady, also 12, as they w1th Edward's sister Marion, 14, were departing from th~ temporary home of the Crowes at 1050 Private road, Hubbard Woods, for a stroll on the beach, Tuesday morning. This happened shortly before 11 <>'clock. A~_t hour later life guards were draggmg the lake for the bodies of Edwar~ and Dorothy. Water wings kept Marton afloat until Miss Edith ~..}Iars, a. nurse, waded out to her resc ue. Little Marion Crowe related a thrilling story of her experience, Tuesday night. According to her account, her brother was the first to realize their peril. She says they had two water wings with them and that Edward suggested the girls put them on and make for the shore, while he would capsize the boat, then half-filled with water, and hold to it until rescued. Marion adds that she threw one of the water wings to Dorothy and, adjusting the other to herself, jumped into the lake. That's all she remembers of her companions. Many Witneaa Traaecly Witnesses to the tragedy say that more· than a score of persons, half of them men, were on the beach at the time and helpless to give aid, because none of the men could swim. Among them was Alice Parsons, who lives at the home of F. H. Hardy on Private road. Slie says a Mrs. Consberg rushed out to Sheridan road and intercepted a dozen motorists in a frantic and futile effort to find assistance for the periled children. Every motorist 1 couragement to the girl who was nearly exhausted. "Miss Ellars didn't rescue me" Marion said later, "but only for h~r encouragement I should have collapsed and sunk. In the meanwhile the Evanston lifesaving station had been notified and acting Captain H. T. Zahn and his crew responded. They recovered the fatal craft, but although they spent hours dragging in SO feet of water in the vicinity of the drownings, neither o~ the bodies was recovered, Tuesday n·ght. She is a seamstress and has done work for the George L. Smith family, 1050 Private road. The Smiths recently went away for a brief vacation and Mrs. Crowe was taking care of the home dt,1ring their absence. Dorothy · Brady's mother is Mrs. Crowe's sister and lives at 6615 Winchester avenue, Chicago. Her father is dead.
