It was · ts CALLED ·sy DEATH 1n while attending this church that he met ~orth Roger Williams Hardman, Sr., Organizer of Baptist Congregations, Dies at Milwaukee Roger Williams Hardman, Sr., for 111atw years a resident of Chicago and H.ogers Park but 1t10re recently of Evanston and well known on the north shore 'where he made his home with his s~n, passed away at the Milwaukee, \Vis., sanitarium, Thursday, February 4, following an illness of only ten days duration. Mr. Hardman was in his eightieth year, but retired from a long active business life only hvo years ago. His health began failing about a year ago, but his final illness was of brief duration. Funeral service s were conducted at the Rogers Park Baptist church, Saturday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Burial was at Rose Hill. Mr. Hardman was born ] anuary 12, 1847, at Martinsburg, Ohio, his parents being Elias and Nancy Hardman. A s a young man he taught in the local schools, coming to Chicago when 26 years of age. He became associated with the firm of Field and Leiter with \dtQm he remained for t\.vo years, when he entered the employ of the wholesale drygoods firm of ]. V. Farwell and company, and with whom he remained continuously until his retirement two years ago. ~1 r. Later they afliliatcd themselve s with the new organization of the La Salk Avenue Bflptist church where they became actively identified with all the church activities, he being superintendent of the Sunday school for many years, and deacon fr<;>tn its o~ganization until he and his fanuly, movmg further north in the city, again a ssisted in the organization of a new church, known as the Belden Avenue Baptist church. Again movin~ further !10rth he and h_is family establtshed thetr new home 111 RoCYers Park where they lived 33 years, untfi the death of his wife, in ] une, 1920. There being no Baptist church in Rogers Park when the family settl d there, they worshipped with the Con gregational church. About a year later, the Hardmans ; with eight or ten other Baptist familie s, organized the present Rogers Park Baptist church, where Mr. Hardman again became deacon from the date of it s organization and was for matl\' vears superintendent of its Sunday school and deacon · emeritus for the last fi,·e vears. . Since ·the death of his wife, Mr. Hardman has made his home with his eldest son, Roger \V. Hardman, of 2202 \\.c slev avenue Evanston.
