October 1, 1926 W·I L M E T T E L I F E '· ·.; The Da:v of the Big Flood-Or~ "Oh How It Rained" ' --------------------~----------------------~ Seldom has Wilmette witnessed such a sight as the flooded streets which resulted from the extremely heavy rain on Thursday afternoon of last week. The scenes pictured above are typical of many parts of the village on that afternoon. On the upper left hand is shown the intersection of Eleventh . ~t reet and Greenwood avenue, with the children playing in the water. In the upper center is shown the street in front of the vVILMETTE Ln·e office, with the fire department pumping water out of the baseme11t so that the paper could come out on time. On the upper right arc Walter Miller and Harold Hurt, of Park avenue, "ferrying" a woman "passenger" across the street at Centre..} and Park avenues in their wagon. They conducted a profitable .ferry business until the water subsided. The lower left hand picture looks east on Central avenue from Park avenue and shows an automobile surging through the waves. The lo~;er center picture shows David Henderson and George Maxwell "sculling" their boat along Main street.
