50 WILMETTE LIFE ships now in general use by the Army and Navy which compare favorably with the fighting planes of the rest of the world. Through a combination of a new plane made by the Boeing Airplane company of Seattle, Washington, and the most powerful engine for its pounds in the world made by the Packard Motor car company, the navy has obtained a standard aerial fighter which at the recent airplane races in Philadelphia set up a new world's record for such ships over a closed course of 180.495 miles an hour. It took first place easily against more than a dozen of the fastest standard , pursuit machines of the United States. · The Packard-Boeing victory at Philadelphia came as a climax to a series of dramatic demonstrations of Packard engines. First, just a few weeks ago, the Improved Packard car with its greatly increased power was introduced to the public. Shortly ·afterwards Packard engines made clean sweeps of the great international motor boat racing classics, the Gold Cup and Sweepstakes contest.
