~ebruary 25, 1927 WILMETTE whose term expires this spring, has found a host of unsolicited backers who are determined that he shall be a candidate for re-election. It is the contention of these sponsors of his candidacy that his services and t!Xpericnce should not be lost to the village. "I am for Mr. Orner, regardless of party affiliation but I am also for Paul Hoffman on the strength of his splendid record," came to be virtually a slogan with all these proponents of the Hoffman candidacy at Wednesday's caucus. It was Albert N. Page, a former colleague of Mr. Hoffman on the Village board, who sounded the keynote of this widespread sentiment. Praise for DeBerard General regret was expressed at \Vednesday's meeting over the decision of Trustee W. W. DeBerard to discontinue his official connection with village affairs at the expiration of his term of office this spring. Illness in his family, coupled with the increasing d_emands upon his time and services as chief engineer of the Regional Planning association were given hy Mr. DeBerard as his reasons for not seeking re-election. Mr. DeBerard's ·Services as trustee will be sorely missed, particularly in connection with the extensive sewer and water iin· provement program for the west area which has been under his expert elire.c tion. Caucus Chairman Quits Still another surprise came Thursday morning when Max Zabel, chairman of the Home party caucus, declared that he had resigned from that position prior to the Wednesday night meeting giving as his reason that he did not care to "take a part in an organization which "'as not pla-ying fair." And thus, a ticket that flourished for a few brief hours on Wednesday appeared to he all but ·destroyed before noon on Thursday. \Vednesday night's caucus proceedings, outlined in another column of this issue of WILMETTE Ln·t. found John Clark Baker as chairman in the place of ~[ax Zabel, a fact that caused a ripple of interested comment among the assembled citizens. Matters proceeded peacefully enough until the report of the Nominating committee had been heard and the motion to have it approved by the caucus presented by G. T. Hellmuth: committee chairman.
