BROWN (Director of Restarch and Principal of New Trier Summer School) Enrollment of 663 students is expected in the New Trier High school summer session this summer, accordinv_ to S'Chool authorities. This is based on the fact that last summer's enrollment of 617 students was 45 percent of the enrollment of the regular school year just preceding that summer school. If the same ratio holds for t hi~ summer, one can take 45 percent of this vear's October enrollment of 1.468. which gives an estimate of 663 st u<lcnts for this year's summer school. The summer school opens June 20 and continues until August 12. \Vhen it is considered that 45 perrent of the student body is attending :-ummer school .despite the counter attractions of summer camps, travel and sports, one realizes the immense popularitv of this New Trier institution. Prol)ahly this is partly due to the fact that the north shore itself is one of the world's finest summer resorts. Attend by Preference I was very much struck by the .fact t hat a large portion of last year's summer school students were here not beca use they had to be, b.ut because they wanted to be. Many were vacationing at home during the early summer months, and were taking full advantage t ,j the opportunities offered hy the lah·. tennis courts, golf clubs and other recreative facilities · of the north shore. Th('se things did not fill their eittire time. and consequently, of their own \·olition, thev added summer school in the morning- to their vacation program. ~~any of these students planned to take trips to other parts of the country during the thirty days between summer school and the opening of the fall :;emester. ~ome other reasons for attendance at s ummer school arc the following: Secure Entrance Unib Several seniors had changed their selection of colleges at the last minute, and found that they did not have exac tly the right entrance units. They werr very glad to take advantage of our summer school to complete requirements. :\ great many juniors were afraid that they would not have quite · enough credits and points for graduation at the end of the next year, and to insure agai_ n st this, they attended summer Winnetkan Again Heads United States Chamber of Commerce, school. was relected president of the Rotary . Form of huurance · I found that many students looked on summer school credit as business men look on insurance. They reason that thty may at some time in their high school course be unable to 'COmplete a full semester's work, due to sickness or tra_vel or other irregularities. Consequently, they accumulate some credit in summer school in order to make it possible for them to graduate on time even though some such unforseen contingency should occur. Their only opportunity to do this was to take a fifth year at New Trier, or to attend summer school. CoJ)sequently, the summer session found them at work in New Trier. Summer school classes are scheduled in the morning during the cool part of the day, leaving the warm afternoon open fQr recreation. Most people feel that students should have some vacation in the summer, and conseQuently summer school is arranged to close one full month before the beginning of the fall term to allow the students a complete cessation of academic activity. price range of from to Since the people of the north shore in increasing numbers are recognizing the advantag-es of summer school, it is quite possible that this estimate of 663 students for the 1927 summer school will be too low.
