May 20, 1927 Arrange Plans for Reelected War on Mosquitoes Throughout County ..__ ___.,...._ _ _ __. The East now comes West for its mosquito advice! The presence in Chicago of the headquarters of the Gorgas Memorial Institute, which offers advice on mosquito control problems, brought the appeal for assistance to the West it is believed, for the first · time in l;is· tory. · Major Edwin M. Skinner, director of mosquito control of the Gorgas Memorial Institute, who is also directing the survey in the Chicago Metro·· politan area, returned today, after .responding to the eastern call. Hi s trip took him to the Maine coast where he surveyed Mount Desert and Cranberry Islands. On the former island are located the summr f estates of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Edsel Ford. Prolific breeding areas of salt marsh mosquitoes were found by Major Skinner on Mount Desert Island, even on both sides of the highway connecting the island with the mainland not far from Bar Harbor. ".T hese conditions are not unusual." said Major Skinner, "but the. mosquito population has been increasing in recent years, and now the leaders of the summer colony have decided that science must be called upon to rid the beautiful areas of the mosquito pests, just the same as Chicagoans are finding mosquitoes objectionable, now that they realize they can be conquered.
