87 Etlitla Atwat. ~raadt · Miss Edith A. Maddox of the National Kindergarten and Elementary college addressed the February session of the Logan-Howard Pre-school Circle last Wednesday at the. Howard school. Her subject, "What to Ext)ect of the Pre-school Child," is close to the hearts of the members of the club. · As an experienced teacher · dealing all th~ while with children of this age, Miss Maddox brought the viewpoint of an outsider who analyzes children as they are when out of the home setting, removed from the immediate mother influence. In opening her -talk this teacher asserted the principle that we should not build up theories and try to make children fit into them but, rather, study children to discover the norm and then work to definite ideals with this norm in mind. Attitudes and habits are the points to keep foremost in dealing with very young children.; attitudes and habits with regard to dressing, to care of the person, to eating and sleeping. These were discussed with completeness by the speaker, both as to what habits and attitudes may reasonably be er.pected and as to what methods may be used to help children to acquire them. Her ideas with regard to the background of experience little children should have were especially interesting, as it ·is her · belief, founded· upon research work among the children under her observation, that many do not have sufficient experiences of the "homey" type, both accessible and desirable, such, for instance, as trips · through the fire engine house, rides on trains, excursions through gardens, washing dishes. Miss Maddox is further of the opinion that the best toy is not the finjshed toy but rather the sort that yields to change and provides material for the child's creative powers to develop. An increasing interest is being shown in these club meetings planned especially for Wilmette mothers of the · pre-school children. The March meeting will fall on the evening of March 14, on which date it will be our privilege to hear Miss Clara Dietz of the Glencoe · Public schools. Miss Dietz is a naturalist of rare ·teaching ability whose work in the department of science in Glencoe is an outstanding feature of that village. All Wilmette mothers and fathers are cordially invited to this meeting. '· - - - - - - - - ------ L·th tu Worlllilt Motor C.·· v -- Bu, Your Nas :~· ·. · . W· · .. .
