Anutroq Accompanied by the Editor's taunt of "Innocents Abroad!" the Social Ed and mlself descended upon Mr. Clyde Elliott s New Evanston theater last Monday night to help Jean Ball con· duct her new-and as far as we know only-three act play, "Companionate Marriage," through the throes of its "world premier." We-Miss Ball, the Social Ed and myself-were entirely successful; possibly because we were "Diplomacy," in George C. Tyler's revival will open next Monday at the aided J.D&terially by some 900 other people. Blackstone theater. As we entered the theater-for once several minutes before the curtain went up-we were particularly intrigued to notice that by far the larger, percentage of the capacity house was sporting either bald or silver heads and a noticeable rotundness about the center portion of the anatomy. "Flaming youth," with the exception of a few staunch defenders of the creed, was evidently attending to divers other interests. Doubtless, it was allowing its elders to have their "fting" first. Certain it is that the younger generation will not be slow in overcoming the lead established by their parents. The play will be seen and it has the dramatic requisites and is interesting enough to warrant the attention that is being accorded it. As the product of a playwright, it is excellent. It is well written, has clever lines : the characters are true to their established temperaments and ideals throughout ; the dramatic sequence is finely developed-all and all, it is a fine product. But- · The plot. as you may have deducted from its title, is based upon the popular conception of Judge Ben Lindsay's theory of "companionate marriage," that few understand and yet all have definite opinions on. This version of the theory owes its inception to the failure ·on the part of the public to read thoroughly Mr. Lindsay's articles on the subject and the subsequent confirmation of their opinion by a no less poorly informed press. This version should be known properly as "trial marriage," which. by your leave, is quite different from "companionate marriage." You may correctly gather that it is inferred that Jean Ball is wrong in her premise as far as "companionate marriage" is concerned. She is dealing with "trial marriage." These facts are brought out because it seems perfectly obvious, which may or may not be the correct deductionwhich in turn does not matter for the res!Jlt with the public is the samethat the play has been written as a refutation of the Lindsay theory. As it is wrong in foundation and is theref?re wrong throughout, it is a subversaon of the truth and a misrepresentation of the idea which it is supposed (Continued on Page 54) ALSO
