Williams ·of Glencoe offers first and second prizes in each of the several divisions of ·the contest. A contestant may write as many articles as he desires for entry in the contest, and there are no limitations as to ·character. Contributions must be given to Miss Mabel Payton of the High school English department not later than 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, May 11. The Central-Laurel Parent-Teacher association held a meeting on T~e.sday evening, April 17, in the Byron-Stolp gymnasium. . The program. was , in · charge of the ·School · Beautiful committee and the Public School Art league. Mrs. Ernest Freeman, president of the P. T. In the absence of Mrs. Weedon, chairman of the School Beautiful league, Mrs. Mar~ .guerite Taylor introduced the speakers of the ·evening. Mrs. ]. R. Harper presented the prizes won by the various rooms for securing one hundred percent membership for the Art league. The first prize was awarded to Mrs. Glennon's fourth grade for 100 percent membership of mothers and fathers and children. The other prizes were given for 100 percent membership of children. Prizes went to Miss McPartlin's fifth grade, Miss Harding's fourth grade, Miss Chase's, Miss Scott's, and Mrs. Julian's sixth grades, Miss Brown's fifth grade, Miss Keene's third grade and Miss Corcoran's room. Each room was represented by one child who gave a little speech of thanks for the gift. The prints presented were "Chrysanthemums" by Houben, · "Treasure. Jar" by · Couse, "Feeding Her Birds" by Millet, ."The Pioneers" by Amick, "Eventide" · by Bomamici, and the "Rug Weaver," and "Dutch Windmills." Two pieces ·.of sculpture were awarded, "Diane and the Stag," and ..The Wrestlers," and two charts of Egyptian and Roman times. Each award was given according to the need and desire of the various rooms receiving them. Mrs. Taylor then introduced ·Miss Lena McCauley, art critic for the Chicago Evening Post, who gave a very interesting talk on the splendid work that has been accomplished along · artistic lines in the public schools. Miss McCauley pointed out. that a beautiful picture in a school room gives the children all the romance and beauty of a fairy story, and that beautifying the school grounds gives them a civic pride. She said that the ParentTeacher organization is one of the greatest things of the time. The Art league gave a beautiful painting to the public schools as a memorial to Miss Viola Caswell. Sev-· eral other organizations contributed to the purchase fund, among them The Central-Laurel P. T. A., 'The Teachers' ·· club, The Board of Education and a ·oomber of individuals. The painting is the work of James Topping and is called ..Across the Valley." It is a landscape of autumn. Mr. Harper told of Miss Caswell's twenty years of splendid work in the Wilmette schools and of the love and respect she was given by the teachers who were asso.ciated .with her and the children who came under her care. E. L. Nygaard, Kenilworth superintendent, who is a personal friend of the painter, told something of his life . and character. The stage was beautifully decorated with ferns and flowers in honor of the occasion and the painting was displayed so that all could see it. The prize for attendance was a tie, between Miss Weyman's and Miss Clark's rooms. GilbeJit Keith of 222 Ninth street, spent this last week-end at the Illinois Military academy, in Abdingdon, · Ill., where he was the guest of Gaylen Harvey, who lives at 214 Ninth street. ~~ - .. . -- - - --
