Wilmette harbor will be the s t o p p i n g point on one of the legs of the trip. This is the Dick Pope first time this type of craft has attempted to race in open water, Mr. Pope said, and those familiar with the sport are anxiously waiting the starting gun. Outboard motor racing has become a popular sport and the Milwaukee. Chica_Bo marathon will be the opening event of this season. Some fourteen gold and silver trophies have been donated for the amateur classes by the leading sport;men as well as many large cash prizes for those entering in the free-for-all class. Entries will come from all over the United States. Among them will be Commander Eugene F. McDonald, Jr., Chicago, commodore of the American Outboard Motor association C\nd chairman of the marathon race committee, who is entering with his famous little outboard racer, "Baby Zenith," the same one he used in the Hudson River marathon. Among those on the race committee are Howard Richardson, chairman ·of the finance committee; J. W. Sackrider, chairman of the reception committee; H. H. Erickson, c~_airman of the arrangeme~lts committee; and Dick Pope, national executive vice-commodore of the American Outboard Motor association, chairman of the publicity committee. These committee chairmen have already received the utmost cooperation ftom the many interested yacht clubs up and down the Lake Michigan coast. The coast guard and the Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts will also assist in patrolling the coast because of the legendary uncertainty of Lake Michigan that injects into the race a certain element of risk that only efficient patrolling can lessen. The start of the race will . be Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from Milwaukee Yacht club and the first leg of the long journey will end at Racine. Next will come the jump to Kenosha. From Kenosha the racers will continue to Waukegan where lunch will await them. Then to Wilmette, to stop at the Sheridan Shore Yacht club and finally the last leg of the run will be made from Wilmette to the Municipal Pier at Chicago, arriving there about 5 o'clock. When one pictures a hundred or more of these diminutive craft hurtling over the wave5 at a speed of from twenty-five to thirty-five miles an hour so fast that sometimes the little boats jump out the water for twenty feet or more, it seems hard to realize that they are driven by the outboard motor. little engines th~t several years ago were only useful for lake rowboats and yacht dinghys.
