K. for Shutters to Be Added After House Is Finished When the home is first built necessarily stringent financial limitations prevent the incorporation of many features or embellishments which later can add·' much to the livability and at· tractiveness of the house. An em· bellishment of this sort which may seem offhand, nonimportant is that of outside blinds or shutters, nowadays more useful for their addition to architectural balance and interest than for their original purpose of protection from storms. The architectural type which best lends itself to the addition of the shutter is the colonial, but if proportion permits shutt'ers are quite as appropriate on any modern adaptation of design. The colonial shutters may be of either the louvre type or the solid blind of batten construction, usually pierced with some sort of characteristic design. Diamond, crescent, pine tree, candlestick and many other designs symbolic of the colonial era are popular and appropriate, but an individual design is probably best. Probably the only consider.1tions to be watched in the matter of installing shutters are good construction and appropriateness. Appropriateness takes in the matter of tasteful adherence to truth. For instance, the familiar abomination of individual shutters attached to the outside window in a grouped unit is one of the most com~ mon evidences of lack of discrimination in home decoration. It is axio~ matic, in thi s light that ornamentation should have its foundation in good usage. One shutter on the out~ side of the unit can serve no possible purpose. The usual color scheme for the shutter is a simple green, con strasting pleasantly with the usual white of the colonial house. However, a declaration of freedom in color is now in vogue and many rather startling hues NEW P ·L ASTIC PAINT FOR WALL \¥ith the renaissance of textured walls in the modern period homes, the new plastic paints are Qlaying an interesting part in the textures and finishes which they make possible. Their color combinations are man y, their textures varied in the extreme. Application is a simple matter and the cost ' is not high. Double Hung Windows · Still Holding Favor Double hung windows have just as many points in their favor as they ever had, and there are ' still many people who prefer them, even though this is a time when casements are much in vogue. ' For the henefit, therefore, of the man who wants double hung sash for his home, one might mention the fact that the double hung window affords ~n opening at the bottom for cool air to enter and an opening at the top for wat:"m air to escape. This arrangement is e~pecially serviceable . in rooms which. have windows on only one side. Even in stormy weather a dowblc hung window can usually be opened a little at the top without admitting the water. Then, too, in cold weather a double hung window may be opened at the bottom with a slanting pane of glass such as is often used in offices and homes to deflect drafts upw~rd. And, again, double hung wmdows usually have larger panes of glass than casement windows, casement glass, except in casements of the best type is small. And large panes are easier to keep clean than small ones. SPECIAL GARDENING TOOLS There are special tools for each kind of gardening operation, and, as special tools save time in automobile rep~iring, so in garden work they lighten and speed it up and are \1\'ell worth the investment.
