The Chicago Symphony orchestra, under the direction of Eric DeLamarter, will play a special program on this occa§jon, featuring many of the most celebrated German composers including, of course the im~ortal Richard Wagner. Jac'ques Gordon, violinist, will be the soloist. The occasion will have a festive air and Dr. H. A. Kroll, Ge.rman Vice-consul General, will .be present and will speak. The second of these national concerts has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon, July 22, and will take the form of "An Afternoon of French Music and French Composers." In addition to the concert by the Chicago Sy.m phony orchestra in which French music wi!! be featured, La Chorale Francaise de Chicago, Charles Legourgue conducting, will present several ensemble groups. · This is one of the largest choral bodies in the United States devoting itself to the presentation of French music, and it ~-ill be remembered that it appeared at Ravinia last season with unusual success. Leon Rothier, French basso of the Ravinia Opera forces, will give the occasion a p~triotic air by singing "La Marseilles." Alfred Wellenstein, 'cellist, will be the soloist with the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Double Bill Saturday Special interest is a_ttached to the double bill of "Pagliacci" and "Cavalleria Rusticana" which is scheduleq for Saturday night, July 14. This is the revival of Xavier Leroux's splendid dramatic opera "Le Chemineau" which long held ~n important place in the Ravinia repertoir~ but which has not been given since 1924. This work is extremely popular with American opera patrons in view of the fact that as spoken drama under the title of "The Harvester" it served as one ot Otis Skinner's most effective vehicles. Another item of special intt:rest during the pending week is the season's first presentation of "Fra Diavolo," a light work which cl~sses as opera comique and which is filled with merry tunes which are introduced one after another as its romantic story (which ends happily) is told. The several cast changes which are to be effected during the week all tend to add spice to the repertoire. Miss Easton is to be heard as Elsa in "Lohengrin" and Miss Bourskaya will appear as Ortrud in this same Wagnerian work. Queena Mario, who has won special attention at Ravinia this year, is to have the part of J uli~t in Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet." Mr. Tokatyan will sing the role of Leopold in "La ] uive." Miss Claussen will be Amneris in "Aida" and Mr. Ananian will be the King.
