July 27, 1928·. WI L f,l E T T E L IF£. ' ·. · 'I '1: ' (Contributed by Wilmette Garden Club} No matter how pleasing one's surroundings, a change is a benefit. Even a week-end away from one's accustomed haunts affords an opportunity for a change of outlook. One's treasures have become commonplace by constant association with them, · even the garden has become a matter of course, for beauties seen day after day are often too familiar for appreciation. Go away for a while and on your return you will see your world through rose colored spectacles. · A woman who lives on the west side in Chicago drove out with us a few wee ~s ago, to see some of the gardens up north. Her enthusiasm for the trees and flowers and fields was so spontaneous and her ·pleasure so evident, and so surprising to us who rode with eyes half closed to the beauty through which we passed, because we had seen it so often, that we suddenly recalled how wonderful this section had appeared to us when we first saw it, beautiful beyond belief. A week after this drive, we spent a few days at one of the Wisconsin lakes. We rose while the country was quiet and fresh when there was not a sound except the song of the birds, and watched the early morning sky chang from grey. \\'e saw the first warm streak of rose color appear and watched the sky grow brighter and brighter. We saw colors· whose existence we had forgotten. By day, the view of the distant hills of Waukesha delighted our eyes. Early evening, at sun set, we spent i-n a canoe . on the quiet water. By night, the sky was full of brilliant stars, the milky way was clearly visible. One had a feeling of vastness, loneliness, greatness. The drive back, after such an experience, is far more interesting titan the drive out. One notices how fresh and green the country is. One sees the north shore as the woman from the west side of Chicago saw it. Home again, and one's own trees, one's own flowers, are twice as fair, seen with new eyes. I .Garden Talks . I At ·. H. Strubinger. of the department of h?r.ticul!ure, Co!le~e of Agriculture, L mvers1ty of Illm01s. \iVhen weeds are allowed to grow unmolested for a few d~ys during th e hot weather they e1ther choke out the smaller growing vegetables or seriously impair their quality by retarding their progress he added. ' . "If constant cultivation is practiced 111 the garden there should be little difficulty in controlling weeds that might otherwise occur. However, if for any reason the garden is not cared for and w~eds are allowed to gain headway, 1t may take considerable time and patience to rid the premises of them. "If the weeds are small they may be cut off just beneath the surface of the soil in cultivation and will probably die. If they are larger they may need to ~e pulled and carried away. This pulhng can best be. done when the soil is quite moist, and if it is too dry the roots may be cut just below the surface with a sharp knife. Afterwards it is always wise to cultivate the are~ !O kill any weeds that- are just startmg to grow." An average of twenty sets of triplets, 1,500 twins and 135,000 single births are recorded in Illinois each :vear, statistics of the state health department show. 39C CEREALS French Dressing, Old Monk 29C Kellogg's Corn Flakes, 8C . large bottle . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . package . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
