With the exception of "The Jazz Singer," this is probably the best "talkie" that has appeared. Lionel Barrymore, wh<;>, in addition to being a polished stage actor, is also an experienced public speaker, does much to add to the effectiveness of the picture. This film is adapted from the stage play by Charles Klein. The lion is a king of finance who would break a certain Judge Rossmore, played by Alec B. Francis, whom he has had appointed to the bench, and who has dared hand down a decision unfavorable to his benefactor. The mouse is Rossmore's daughter, otherwise May McAvoy. The mouse beards the lion in his den and the lion behaves, as the picture will show you. Lionel Barrymore plays the part of John Ryder and William Collier, Jr., that of Jefferson Ryder. · In addition to her other activities May McAvoy falls in love, as you wouldn't guess. The film has been brought up to date by the director, Lloyd Bacon, and is delightfully presented. On the stage the Granada is offering Benny Meroff in "Love Ships," with Summers and Hunt, Zastro and White, and many others. There will also be movietone, news reel, and novelties. ~----------------------------. Bill-O-Fare Saturday, August 4 "The Lion and the Mouse" ...... Granada "Painted Post" .... . ..... . ...... .. . Tues., Aug. e & 7 f'olleen ~foore Dolores Costello in "College Widow" at Community House Dolores Costello will be seen in the Warner Bros. production, "The College Widow," at the Community House next Tuesday night, August 7. This is a brilliant revival of George Ade's stage play and includes in its cast William Collier, Jr., Anders Randolf, Douglas Gerrard. Charles Hill Mailes, Robert Ryan, Big Boy Williams, Grace Gordon, and others. Archie L. Mayo directed. "The College Widow," is a play of college life and tells the story of the daughter of a college president, who revived the fortunes of the school and secured her father's insecure job by recruiting a winning football team by feminine wiles. It is big, and funny, and human, and has been called "the finest football story ever filmed." The last episode of "Trail of the Tiger" will also be shown at the Community House Tuesday. "A bright, fast-moving comedy and Richard's best in months," is one critic's comment on "Easy Come, Easy Go," a picture in which Richard Dix plays the part of an innocent partner of a crook. The picture is booked for the Community f!ouse next Friday, August 10. Dix as a debonair youn~ , bankrupt is innocently taken in by a gentleman crook. He has more grief than the Chicago police trying to square himself with the one-and-only, whose father the bandit has robbed. The support of Nancy Carroll and Charles Sellon is excellent. The Community House also announces a Pathe review and an Aesop Fable picture, "Barnyard Lodge," for next Friday. · "Bapplaea Ahead" "Blondes Beware" Tuxedo Comedy ~t'rt>t>U Snap-Shots Paramount News WednPsdny, Aug. ~th J,.
