Those who engage in it for pastime are more or less vaguely aware of this, although the chances are they seldom put the thought into words. In every mortal lies the longing to express what he fedJ. But not in every mortal is there the ability to put in concrete form his visions, by any of the usual methods of expression such as writing, painting, composing. M :my people hav~ poetic thoughts yet cannot paint ; the hands of the would be sculptor are untrained and clum5y; the possible composer has never learned .a note. The one who makes a garden has a piece of ground in place of a canvas or a pad of paper. He goes to work upon it without the need of years of special training to make his visions materialize. When he plants iri5 by a pool, or hollyhocks along a wall, he expresses his idea of beauty. In the delicate arrangements of roses, ferns, and hart!bells, in a shady corner someone's prayer is 5aid. In the planting of lilies by a birdbath another writes his poem, sings his song. This opportunity for expression is one of the chief charms of gardening. I Ex-Service Committee· · to Entertain Veterans The regular monthly meeting c.f the Ex-Service committee of the Wilmette Woman's club will be held next Monday.
