lls WILMETTE LIFE August 17, 1928 Hubert Bumham Designs An Indian Hill ' Chicago Navy Memorial Hubert Burnham, Evanston architect, has completed the plans for the navy memorial to be erected Qn the lake front at the west end of Navy fier ·(forme_rly. the Municip~l Pier) in Chicago. The me~orial is designed to express Chicago's import~nce in the national navy establishment, and a fund of $200,000 will be sought for its erection. The necessary land ha·s been allocateq at the pier. It i's hoped to dedicate the site with appropriate ceremonies Navy Day, Oct. 27. The memorial is intended both to remember those who have given their lives in the service of the nation and to serve as a patriotic inspiration to the rising generation, as well a·~ to testify to public appreciation of those who served and survived. Centennial The board of trustees of the Chicago World's Fair 1933 Centennial Celebration· has announced the appointment of ,.Ceorge W. Dixon as chairman of th~ Committee on Co-operation of Churches. The work of this committee has not yet been defined, but was the purpose of. the board to provide first for the co-operation of the churches of Chicago and America in the organization of the Fair, and second for the co-operation of aJl the faiths of all humanity in a great new World'·s Parliament of Religions. "The opp9rtunity before this committee is so vast," said Mr. Dixon, "that I am almo~t overwhe!med by the responsibility. Of course I shall have in it all Ol)ly the responsibility of an organizer. If the churche·s of America are to co-opeY:ate for the Fair, that must be achieved under the leadership of great figures in the American church. Likewise, if there is to be a great meeting of the religiously minded men and women of our time in a common devotion to reverence and charity, that must be accomplished under the leadership of_ the gre~test figures in the entire religious world. "The tru~tees will proceed deliberately in choosing the memb~rs of the committee. I ha..ye no idea that can be accomplished s}:lort of several months. In the meantime we will have a modest office at the general headquarters of the F<:1ir and thus provide a common . meeting grou~Jd for church men and women who may desire to keep ;n touch with the Centennial."
