I September i', 1928 I WILMETTE LIP~ Milliott Chevrolets a Months; Made ;, · Sets a New Record The Chevrolet Motor company has reached a new mile-~tone in its manufacturing · history. With production and sales continuing at a record September clip, the miUionth car of 1928 came off the assembly line at Flint last Tuesday afternoon. The record making car was a coach one of the most popular models in th~ line. It was a standard model in every respect. Like hundreds of thousands of Chevrolet coaches it was furnished in avenue green Duco, with Tartan tan wheels, black beading and striping in gold. After a brief informal ceremony the millionth car passed through the usual channels of distribution and was shipped a few hours after it came off the line to a dealer in the middle west. An idea can be grasped of the immensity of the task of building 1,000,000 cars in less than eight months when it is borne in mind that to achieve this record it was necessary that a Chevrolet be built approximately every ten seconds of every working day. Computing on the basis tllat there are 25 working days a· month, it means that one million cars were built in a little more than 200 working days. Never in the history of the automobile business has this record been approached by any other manufacturer of gear shift cars. I Neglect of Motor Road. Ia Coatly in Miaaouri The high cost of neglectiag to build roads is forcibly pointed out in Missouri's annual highway commission report. In 1920, during the height of the bad roads era in that state the limited mileage of improved highways saved the motorist ·only 97 cents yearly on the average. In 1927 after the completion of a goodly portion of Missouri's sensible road plan, the saving per vehicle owner through lowered automobile operating costs was $74.59, or more than $50,000,000 to all motorists. · But the story gets more interesting when it is related that in 1920 the Show-Me motorist was paying $7.11 in motor vehicle taxes with a very small comparative return, while in 1927, with gas ancj vehicle taxes averaging $21.29, the return, . because of improved highways was three and one-half times.
