'September 21, 1928 WILMETTE · LIFS istratlon, although it will facilitate the! work of the recreation staff, is not: compulsory, as membership is open to· any activity at any time, Mr. Davis said. The combined attendance in the gymnasium classes-basketball, volley ball, ·and playground ball league-last year averaged considerably more than a thousand. The sports leagues alone, which were ,not organized until late May, had an average attendance of fifty peoP.le each Monday evening the league was conducted. Each of the gymnasium classes had an approximate weekly attendance of f<;>rty. BOOST WOMEN'S PLAY · ! ~·. More c,.aaaium Clu~. aad ED~ed Athletic Propam PlaDDecl bJ RecreatioD Board thia ·Year Additional gymnasium classes for women and an enlarged program of women's athletics will mark th~ "greater woman's program" planned by the Wilmette Playground and Recreation board for the ensuing season. Instead of the customary two nights' program devoted to gymnasium classes at · each gyqmasium, three nights will be given over to women's wot:k which will follow a tentative schedule out. lined by Director of Recreation Daniel M. Davis. Begin11ing Monday evening, October 29, the date set for the opening of the winter adult program· the women will start their season with a league of six or eight teams in volley ball. Monday evening~ .will be devoted to sport& leagues to be played at the Stolp gymnasium. Following volley ball a longer· season of basketball will be started and at the end of that season indoor ball will start, followed later by playground ball in the late spring and early summer. Tuesday evenings both the Howard an~ Stolp gymnasiums will be given to women. ·Gymnasium classes will be conducted in both places. At Howard the Tuesday class will be restricted to married women· and members ' of the Parent-Teachers association. An additional class will be conducted on Thurs'day night at that gymnasium for unmarried women and girls of the "teenage" group. In addition, if. there is sufficient demand, a hockey team will be organized for the fall season. An effort is also being made to arrange for swimming classes for women at a nearby tank. If this materializes it will be arranged for Wednesday evenings. All activities for women are free and open to every woman resident of \Vilmette or employed in Wilmette. The enlarged program is seen as a preparatory step to a regular women's department in connection with the playground and recreation board with a full time woman director under the · supervision of the director of recrea· tion. Vast strides were made in . woman's work last year; Director Davis announced, and, encouraged by the increased attendance in the three gymnasium class.es conducted at the first of the season, the staff of the recreation board thinks that by the end of another season the new, organization will be a fact.. Mr. Davis said that the attendance in the gymnasium classes -alone last year had a tendency to increase instead of drop as the warmer weather approached, which was the first time that he had witnessed that in his recreation experience. Wofnen interested in any phase of activity conducted by the board or having suggestions for additional activities are requested to telephone Miss Joe Skidmore at Wilmette 468 and register for the gymnasium class or sports in which they are interested.
