With the thought that the street should be remodeled to fit modern transportation conditions, Los Angeles has contributed the pedestrian tunnel to the cause of accident prevention. The coast city now has 41 foot subways in service · near schools where motor traffic is usually heavy. These underground passageways make 'it possible for the youngsters to cros·s the street in complete safety. Automobile traffic is speeded up and the. drivers are relieved of a great worry. The first pedestrian tunnel in Los Angeles was constructed in 1924, largely as an experiment. The results were so gratifying that a widespread program was adopted. The 41 tunnels now in use will soon be supplemented by others under construction. These tunnels vary in length from 100 to 300 feet. However, engineers are recommending that they be as short as possible, and to this end stair-steps are replacing ramp descents . Highland Park, Michigan, has constructed two such foot subways near schools and has designs for a third with others contemplated. Pedestrian tunnel·s have not as yet been adopted for adult use at busy downtown street intersections, but with automobile traffic increasing it is not unlikely that such subways will be installed. ------------- -- It's hard to keep pride from the tone of voice which says: "Mine Ierce-~ · tf a rrow ,, If there is such a thing as aristocracy among motor cars, Pierce-Arrow is to the manor born.
