Tuesday she went to the Chrysanthemum ·show at the Stevens hotel. Wednesday, she attended the illustrated lectures by Dudley Crafts Watson given by the Garden Club of Illinois. Today she is going with the Wilmette Garden club to Garfield Park conservatory to the Chrysanthemum ·show where a guiqe will take the group througl;L and explain the various interesting features of the conservatory. She feels that she has been very fortunate tn have chosen for her visit a week oi ;:.Ich remarkable opportunities. These opportunities, so common to us that many of us pass them by, are fully appreciated by the people who do not live here. We follow our usual routine and haven't the time to enjoy things that others come miles to see. Next week I will tell you of some of the things that she saw during those three remarkable days. Mrs. W. Frank McClure and her daughter, Katherine, have come from Traverse City, Mich. where they spent the summer, to stay at the Orrington hotel, Evanston, until after the holidays. The McClures formerly were re· sidents of Wilmette. -oMrs. ]. A. Burrill of- 812 Greenwood avenue was hostess to the Drama Stud:v c.lub last Tuesday afternoon. Gavel Club to Hold I . Garden Talks Debate Tournam·e nt to Pick Champion ·----------·------------------· (Contributed by the The Gavel club, · debating organization of New Trier High school, is holding a debate tournament to pick the champion debater of the club. Pairings for the twenty members of the ~lub taking part in the tournament were announced thi's week as follows : Richard Gage vs. Ralph Dillon, Olin Sethness vs. Ea.rl Lingle, John Erickson vs. Joe Stixrud, Richard Nichales vs. Kurman, Bop Livingston vs. Richard Older, Lowell Comee vs. Ralph Horsting, John Warren vs. Albert Denton, Dick Longini vs. Jim Alsdorf, Dick Barnard vs. Schilbach, and Solon Reiley vs. Fred Schmidt. The'se debates will be judged by members of the club. The club meets each Friday during the school year. Its program for the year includes seve_ral short talks on debate strategy by Chester E. M11cLean, New Trier debate coach, an!f speeche·s by several outsiders. Among these speakers are : Miss · Gertrude Baylis, on a year's leave of absence from China, who will talk on the legal system in that country, and Dr. Clark from Korea. One of the chief purposes of having outside speakers for the club, according to Debate Coach 1,{acLean, is to provide speech material and theme subjects for the members. Miss Elizabeth Fitch. who has been on duty at the Walter Reed hospital in Washington is being transferred to Porto Rico. She is arriving in Wilmette November 20, for a short visit before departing for her new work. -o-Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pape, 804 Ridge avenue, have announced the birth of a daughter, Evelyn Jane, on October 19.
