Rabb~ Abba H11lel S1lver of Cleveland, w1dely known as one of the most able Jewish leaders in the United States, will speak at the Uptown Forum, Sunday evening, December 2, on the question "Is Progress a Myth?" Dr. Si!ver, although a young man, has won mternational fame as a great orator and brilliant scholar. His leeture at the forum will deal with some of the most important problems facing the American people. Assisting her · in the ti'cket sale are Mrs. Irene Dahncke, Mrs. Clara Harrison . Mrs. Russell Johnson, and Mrs. C. B. Cochran. Last Tuesday morning at the gencr~l assembly at the Howard school Virginia ~1cConnell received for he; school a large flag from the Legion Auxiliary of Post .X o. 46. The ceremony was witnessed by pupils and teachers of the upper grades. and by the presidents and representative members of the Legion Auxiliary and the school P. T. A. The entire assemblage participated in the singing of America and in the pledge of a11egiance to the flag. ~lr . Todd, the chool principal, introduced Mrs ~ Russell Johnson, the Americanization chairman of the Auxiliary. She briefly explained some of the features of the Auxiliarv work. and especially of the America;1ization committee. In conclusion sl1e presented Commander Harry Hopp, who made the presentation address. He compared the g-rowth of hi story to a building wherein bricks are laid by each generation. As an illustration he mentioned the t:stablishing of Thanksgiving Day by the Pilgrim.::, a tradition that ha .:; been written into history through the succeeding centuries. Commander Hopp then touched on some of the patriotic duties the American Legion will lay up:)ll America's school children as they grow to manhood and womanhood; he dwelt briefly upon the social unrest and the interference our government encounters both within and without the country, becau.;e \\·e have so much freedom; and emphasized . the fact that America must alway.; stand foi peace and good \Yill, and never for the selfish lust for power which the Legion went out to fight in 1917. He commended the essay contest v:hi ch was held in connection with the presentation; and in concluding, read from the prize essay: "As one looks at our fla&, we think of the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world. where all people are created equal and have freedom of soeech and worship their Creator in the way they wish. Long live our flag! May it continue to bring peace, love_, and truth with it wherever it roams." He said these words were worthy ai being told and retold in history classes. Virginia McConnell, a student in 8A and author of the winning essay, then gave an acceptance speech in a modest and entirelv winning manner. The · flag was pre:;ented and retired by three representative boys of the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Miss Laura Durgin , who is teaching at Sheffield, Wis. arrived Wednesday to spend the Thanksgiving recess with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Durgin of 627 Forest avenue. The Uptown Forum meets at the People's church, 941 Lawrence avenue, just east of Sheridan road at 8 o'clock ' · Mrs. Victor Metzger of 419 Maple avenue is at St. Luke's hospital recovering from· a serious operation. It is expected that she will be there two or three weeks longer. M.
