LIFE · · November 30, 1928 Pierce-Arrow to Score New Record for Exports IMore Substantial Paving Now Required on H1ghwaya Growing use of streets and rural roads by heavy frucks and busses is change ~n highway bringing about construction. In order not to curtail the efficiency of trucks and busses through load limitations, highway builders are being forced to construct more substantial pavements. The roadway of today is as important to commerce as steel rails. Bus travel and motor trucking are so widespread that road pavements can no longer be designed without carefully considering commercial traffic, in so far as pavement strength is conceraed. By .so doing. passenger cars are more assured of bumpless travel, and heavy upkeep attendant with inferior roads and massive vehicles is avoided. Pierce-Arrow expo~ts for the present year show a decided gain over the previous year, according to James C. Barber of Evanston,· North Shore dealer. Exports to Holland, Japan, South America, and Switzerland were, in some cases 400 percent greater than any previous year. Clark, of the North Shore Battery Service of Glencoe, Vesta representative. "Heart trouble in a car is as serious to the car as heart trouble in a human being. Of course, you can get a new 'heart' · for your car, but there are ways of protecting it against the majority of the troubles many car owners have. "Especially when the weather temperature goes below 50 degrees is special attention necessary, and as the thermometer goes down and down, additional care must be exercised. It really doesn't involve any great trouble, just precautionary measures-watching, ·is more the word. "This is all on account of the fact that in the cold season the days are shorter and you use your lights longer. Also, a cool or cold engine makes a greater strain on the battery in start· mg. "Inspect your battery more often. Have it tested more regularly, and, if it needs to be taken out and recharged at the battery station, don't hesitate to have it done. Don't think that :t will 'probably' pick up as you drive, for in winter it will not pick up as quickly as in summer. It is far less costly to pay a little to have the battery charged than to overload the battery and perhaps ruin it, either cailing for expensive repairs or the cost of a new battery. "If your lights dim suddenly, when you put your foot on the starter, that is a danger signal that your battery is not up to normal. Have it inspected at once." BARRY'S BIG.
