' .. , The use of the airplane and aerial photography as an aid in ecological study and the teaching of botany has been recommended by Dr. W. G. Waterman, associate professor of botany at Northwestern university, to the members of the Ecological Society of America. Professor Waterman made his first airplane flight for purposes of ecological study more than six years ago, and since that time has been a strong advocate of this modern method for field trips. "In view of the readiness of scientific investigators to utilize any available means of help in solving their problems," said Professor Waterman, "it is somewhat surprising that plant ecologists. have been so slow to take advantage of . the opportunities for observation afforded by the airplane. "Observation llf plant communities from the air is likely to bring out fea · tures that have been overlooked in a ground study. A bog on Cedar .Lake · in Illinois had been visited and studied for twelve years without my noticing any floristic distributions which would account for the dark margin of the bog which was brouflht out clearly in an aerial photograph. Subsequent investigation on the ground showed that the coloration was due to a profuse growth of cranberry whose leaves had been colored by autumn coloration. 'T his, of course, leads to the question as to the edaphic reasons for this distribution-a' problem which will need considerable further study. "This also . suggests the value of aerial photography in observing seasonal changes in vegetation. Such studies usually demand a whole season for completion, but in many cases aerial photography from low elevations could furnish many hints as to Another new building is soon to be erected on Linden avenue in the Terminal section.
