Were it not for the excellent ·acting of the Karl Way Players and the sensational features of the plot, the performance would become monotonous. for it lasts three hours and the setting is unchanged throughout the six scenes. As explained by its author, "White Cargo" is an attempt to portray the stru~gle for development in a cou. n try which steadily defies the encroaching civilization. It is the tragedy of an ever shining sun which breeds inevitable rot; a dry rot which penetrates not only the vegetation and inanimate objects. but the minds and hearts of the white men who attempt to conquer it." Popular Wi", Audience The man who comes nearest to conquering it is Harry Witzel (Karl Way), described as the man "who stays." Despite his snarly, unpleasant disposition, Witzel is, with the possible exception of the doctor, the most popular character in the play. And he is such because of Karl Way's remarkable acting. Upon arriving in Africa and becoming aware of Witzel's antagonism he vows never to return to England until he has accomplished his mission. The only way he will go hack. he says, is on a stretcher-and thus he goes hack. The baking African sun. the fevers, and most of all the part-white Tondele~r o, mistress of manv men, whom he marries, cause his failure. Miss Dorothy Holmes, recently seen in Chicago performance of "The Baby Cyclone," has the part of Tondeleyo. the onlv woman in the cast. She plays her seductive role as one would expect the real part to be played by a halfintelligent "half-breed" of the west African coast.
